A mother and resident of Luzira, a Kampala surburb ,has been sentenced to two years in prison for forcing her 14-year-old daughter into prostitution.

Ruth Nabunya, 35, a mother of two, was arrested in July after her daughter told one of her teachers about how the mother brought men to their home and forced her (the girl) to have sex with them.

The issue came to light after a counselling session on children’s rights at the girl’s school. Apparently, the girl walked up to her senior woman teacher weeping and narrated how she was being forced to sleep with old men.

Nabunya was charged together with her other 17-year-old daughter who has been in detention at Naguru remand home since their arrest in July. The girl was, however, cautioned and set free on grounds of being a juvenile.

The victim, who has completed P.7, had been taken over by the Government for safe custody but was later re-united with her paternal relatives. She continues to undergo counselling.
