The Ugandan government, UNHCR and other UN agencies have launched another Inter-Agency Appeal asking donor community to avail them with more than US$ 220m (about sh572b) to address the plight of South Sudan refugees living in in the country.

Neimah Warsame, the UNHCR country representative said the appeal was launched seeking for more funds to go beyond the provision of life saving services to more predictable medium and long term interventions to the persistent swelling number of refugees from South Sudan.

“We very much appreciate the funds we are getting from donor communities to deal with the emergency issues of the South Sudanese Refugees. However, the funds are still limited and therefore appeal to the donor community to increase the funding so that we go beyond the provision of living saving services to provision of expected services like education, water,  health, protection, nutrition among others,” said Warsame

Warsame was speaking during the launch on Tuesday. The Revised appeal dubbed “Inter-Agency Appeal for the South Sudanese Refugees Emergency in Uganda (January-December 2014)” was held at the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) conference hall and attended by top officials of other agencies and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) involved with refugees.

Warsame said of the total appeal, only 39 percent has been provided by the donor community. She added that the appeal for funds amounting to US$ 224, 303,989 would cater for the financial needs of the various humanitarian agencies such as the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO); International Organization for Migration (IOM); The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) among others to provide essential services to the refugees.

Minister for Disaster Preparedness, Management and Refugees Hilary Onek who launched the Appeal asked the donor community to provide resources to enable the government cater for the refugees and other people of concern. He reiterated government’s commitment to respond to the plight of refugees.

“The government of Uganda will continue to discharge its international obligations and expect equally the donor community to provide resources to enable the government to cater for the refugees and other people of concern,” said Onek.

“We are grateful to donors for the continuous support to refugees and host population. In a burden sharing spirit, I appeal to the donor community to do more.” Said Onek.

The first appeal for 60,000 refugees in Uganda was issued in January 2014. The revised appeal for 100,000 refugees was issued in Uganda in March 2014. The January-December 2014 appeal is the second revision for 150,000 refugees to arrive to Uganda by the end of 2014 and corresponds to the Regional Inter-agency Appeal launched on 11 July 2014.

According to government, Uganda has received more than 119, 659 South Sudanese refugees and more are expected to arrive by end of the year. These refugees continue to be received at transit/reception centres in Adjumani, Arua and Kiryandongo.
