MUK and UCU to compete in moot court competition

Makerere University and Uganda Christian University scored highly in the first phase of National Moot Court Competition on International Humanitarian Law beating Nkumba University, Cavendish, and IUIU and KIU.

MUK scored 1153 points, UCU 989, Nkumba University 968, IUIU 878, KIU 796 and Cavendish University 660 points.

The two universities are set to compete on Wednesday at Serena Hotel and the winner will have an opportunity to participate in the Pan African Moot Court Competition in Arusha, Tanzania in November this year.

James Muhindo from Makerere University said they have gained exposure to exactly what the law provides in regard to cases of law.

Speaking at the opening of the competitions the Communication delegate of International Committee of the Red Cross Adebayo Olowo-AKE said the Competition is aimed at encouraging research and Advocacy amongst students and lecturers.

“As upcoming Advocates, you represent the future of the development and implementation of IHL in the Country and in region, It is imperative therefore that for a such as these not be viewed only as a contest but as a good opportunity to gather as much information as possible and to build networks that will benefit this cause,” Olowo-AKE said.

The commissioner civil litigation at the ministry of Justice and constitutional Affairs Dennis Bireije urged law students to learn the increasing laws and how they can be implemented.

 “When the International criminal court came in, it had certain laws pertaining with money laundering and abuse of international rights, these laws had not been taught in our universities, but now these students who are in universities must learn these laws otherwise if they don’t then their future is brick,” Bireije said.
