For a team so young, Charity’s dominance of Uganda women’s cricket carries plenty of future possibilities.

But the present will be all about celebrating the latest achievement, winning the Mehta Premier League.

Skipper Flavia Laker and Barbara Makankusi scored 17 runs apiece as Charity, who swept last season, helped themselves to the maiden Mehta Premier League with a seven-wicket win over Tornado at Lugogo Saturday.

Charity, who were overwhelming favourites to win the final after defeating the Wanderers by five wickets in a closely contested semifinal.

“I had no doubt that we would win the final but I didn’t take Tornado lightly,” said Makankusi, who is the team’s veteran.

“We are so proud to win this trophy because we were beaten hands down in our last preliminary game by the Wanderers.”

Tornado were led by player-of-series Franklin Najjumba, who scored 17 runs in the final. Mary Nalule took 3-8 for Tornado but their total of 50 runs in 19.2 overs was always going to be hard to defend.

The final was followed by the award-giving ceremony, which saw Charity receive sh750,000 and Tornado sh500,000 from sponsors Mehta Group, who also had trophies for the teams and outstanding individual performers, as well as packs of Sugar.
