THE national housing and population census enumeration exercise has been extended to Sunday September 7 following heavy rains that disrupted the process on Friday, a according to statement from the implementing agency, the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS).

In the statement dated 5th September and signed by Francis W. Mashate, the UBOS National Census Coordinator; says the exercise has gone ahead smoothly throughout the country despite few isolated challenges related to border conflicts and religious beliefs by some cult members.

“The other major challenge has been heavy rains that have impacted greatly on the mobility of enumerators and supervisors,” says the statement.

It adds, “Today (Friday), almost all districts have reported heavy rains for most of the day implying that little work has been done.”

“Following a review of the situation reports this evening, the Census Management has therefore allowed the enumeration to continue and be completed on Sunday 7th September 2014,” the statement read.

It calls “upon all persons not yet enumerated to avail themselves in the remaining two days to be enumerated.”

The countrywide Census enumeration has been taking place from 28th August and was scheduled to be completed on 6th September 2014.

All people, including non-Ugandans who slept in the country on the night of August 27 (Census reference night) are eligible for being counted.

The exercise being conducted under the theme Counting for Improved Service Delivery with a slogan "Together We Count" was slated to end yesterday.

In Kasese 10 followers of a cult known as “Ngulhumbuya” were in arrested Mpondwe-Lhubiriha Town Council in for refusing to be enumerated.

As they were being dragged to Mpondwe border police station, 8 of them accepted but two, Vaniza Kyotusemeza and Kezia Nyakatika remained adamant and were taken to Kasese Central Police station pending prosecution in court.
