Allow me raise my concern about the trend the current generation of Ugandans is taking in as far as reading is concerned.

One wonders what happened to the reading sessions that were reserved in our formative years in primary four to primary seven. Surely if those sessions were not enough to awaken in us the need to find new information through reading, more needs to be done.

A scan through our ‘A’ level students will show that many of them are capable of scoring A’s and B’s  in ‘core’ subjects but when it comes to General paper, they fail !

The problem does not stop there, tune in to any radio station where random quizzes are posed on current issues and you will be disappointed to hear some of the answers the listener(s) air out.

Indeed one wonders whether these people leave in Uganda later on planet earth. Agreeably there are those parents who never went to school such that they can help their children to read but those who got the chance should take a leading role and let the teachers add on what the parents have contributed.

The teachers should be seen by the learners reading materials even not related to their fields of specialization to encourage them.

Lastly I thank the New Vision for intervening to promote reading in schools but the gap is still big.
