Kenya and Uganda could work jointly in the development and exploitation of oil, Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga has said.

Kenya and Uganda could work jointly in the development and exploitation of oil, Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga has said.

According Daily Nation, Odinga said it was important that the two countries worked together since they were new in the oil sector.

Noting that Kenya and Uganda are among countries with the fastest growing populations in Africa, the prime minister said they need to provide quality employment for the youth.

“We need to work together to address the youth unemployment and underemployment. These include the lack of employable skills and limited access to financial and technical resources,” he said on Tuesday during the 50th anniversary of Uganda’s independence in Nairobi.

Odinga pointed out that Uganda remained Kenya’s top trading partner.

“With Uganda, we share a commitment to the East African regional integration. It is therefore in Kenya’s interest that Uganda succeeds,” he said.

He added that this had become particularly useful in the African Union force where troops from both countries were battling the Al-Shabab terror group.

Ugandan High Commissioner to Kenya Angelina Wapakhabulo said the two countries enjoyed cordial relations.
