150 babies born in Kampala on independence day

Over 150 babies were born in Kampala and Jinja main hospitals as the country celebrated its 50th independence anniversary at the Kololo.

Over 150 babies were born in Kampala and Jinja main hospitals as the country celebrated its 50th independence anniversary at the Kololo.

Among the newly born babies, two died.

The spokesperson for Mulago Hospital, Enock Kusasira, said 82 babies were delivered. 42 of these were boys while 40 were girls.

He added that 64 babies were delivered normally while 18 were born through caesarean section.

Nsambya Hospital reported 11 boys and 11 girls while Rubaga Hospital had four girls and four boys.

A midwife in Mengo Hospital, Liz Mutesi, said they delivered 17 babies.

Among these seven were girls and 10 boys. At Kibuli Hospital, three boys and seven girls were delivered.

At Jinja Hospital, 14 babies were delivered. Dr. Michael Osinde, the hospital’s director, said 10 were boys while the rest were girls.

Several mothers urged the Government to improve on conditions in the maternity units especially equipping them with delivery kits and enough beds where they can rest after giving birth.

Agatha Asiimwe, a 24-year-old mother at Mulago Hospital, said: “I feel good giving birth on this day when my country is marking 50 years after independence.

I pray that the next 50 years, the Government will provide at least beds where mothers and their babies can rest after giving birth.” Asiimwe said.

Mariam Abdu gave birth to a 4kg baby boy at Mengo Hospital. She prays that by the time her boy grows up, Uganda will have many good schools and hospitals.

Jovas Kamatesi who gave birth to a boy by caesarean at Mulago Hospital said she was happy to have her baby on the Golden Jubilee.

Berna Nankya who gave birth at Mulago prays for a more developed Uganda with more job opportunities by the time her baby boy grows up.
