A disagreement has emerged between political leaders in Jinja district and teachers over the proposed give-away of Narambhai Primary School for the establishment of a university.

Leaders, including lands, housing and urban development minister Daudi Migereko, have endorsed the relocating of the 79-year-old school to allow Makerere University Business School (MUBS) to set up a branch in Jinja.

During a meeting at Jinja municipality Council chambers on Monday, Migereko stressed his support for MUBS: “As leaders, we must embrace this new development.

There are several schools where we can relocate the pupils to, instead of missing this chance. We had a similar problem in setting up the civil service college after the National Agricultural Research Organisation gave us land but it was given away by the land commission,” Migereko said.

He said the college was almost shifted to Kyankwanzi National Leadership Institute but he managed to convince the Government to rescind the decision.

Migereko was with Moses Balyeku, the Jinja West MP and Paul Mwiru, the Jinja East MP.
He tasked the resident district commissioner, Richard Gulume and the mayor, Muhammad Kezaala, to convene a meeting to resolve the issue.

Kezaala said arrangements for relocating the school to Victoria Nile Primary School’s  upper premises have been finalised.

However, teachers have suggested that since Narambhai Primary School has a big piece of land, the two institutions could co-exist.

“MUBS is just establishing a branch and I would imagine that this does not require many buildings, they should leave the primary school to co-exist with the university,” said a teacher.

The teachers are in fear of where they will be deployed after the school is moved.
