Five injured in Gulu bus accident

Five people were injured after a bus they were travelling in got involved in an accident along Gulu - Juba road Thursday morning.

Five people were injured after a bus they were travelling in got involved in an accident along Gulu - Juba road Thursday morning.

The Aswa region police spokesperson, Jimmy Patrick Okema, said the accident occurred opposite Gulu Primary School, located three kilometers from Gulu Municipality, when the bus, registration number UAU 708B veered off the road as the driver tried to overtake another bus. 

He said which belongs to Friendship Bus Company with 35 passengers on board, was travelling from Adjumani district to Kampala via Gulu town.

Okema attributed the accident to reckless driving and speeding. 

He said the bus driver, Nyakaire Siraji,  who fled the scene of the accident, was trying to overtake a Jawad Coach, veered off the road and plunged. 

Okema said the five people who sustained injuries were rushed to Saint Mary’s Hospital Lacor.

Filder Orach, an eyewitness, said each of the two buses was racing to overtake the other. 


This is the third accident in one week involving buses on major highways after the one in Nakasongola that killed seven people on Monday and in Mabarara that killed one person on Wednesday.
