THERE is still a long way before the 2012 FUBA men’s championship is handed out but it is now clear that the Falcons will be somewhere in contention come the decisive laps of the title race.
Friday at the YMCA, the Falcons defeated the Kyambogo Warriors 69-58 in the Airtel National Basketball League to offer new, credible evidence of their title credentials. The enduring Steven Omony grabbed a game-high 18 points and 10 rebounds, Geoffrey Omondi scored 14 and Phillip Ameny 12 as the Falcons outplayed Kyambogo like no other team in the league this season.
Michael Karuiki and Norman Blick led the Warriors with 13 and 12 points respectively but this was a loss which Kyambogo coach Mandy Juruni blamed on the lack of leadership.
“There was no one carrying the team during the tough spells,” Mandy revealed. “Today the desire to win wasn’t there.”
Kyambogo were without the injured Cyrus Kiviri, arguably their most consistent player this season, and Mandy admitted that his team missed its best perimeter shooter.
Still, on the evidence of the Falcons all-round performance, Kiviri’s presence may not have changed the destiny of this clash. Omony was pleased with how well the Falcons, for whom Abdallah Ramadan scored five points on his season debut, played, saying it was a good sign going forward.
“This just shows how well we are doing and what things we still need to work on,” Omony said. “We want to win all our games so we happy to win tonight.”
Meanwhile, ,Maureen Amoding and Peace Proscovia drilled 11 points apiece as the UCU Canons stretched their record to 19th victory in 19 league games with a 57-29 win over Makerere Sparks.
