Uganda Professional Golfers Association (UPGA) defied an early Wednesday afternoon downpour, firing five under par 67 to lead the President’s Shield professional event at Uganda Golf Club.

Akope coming off defeat to Kenyan Dismas Indiza in the Uganda Open two weeks ago was in bullish mood yesterday, carrying a four-stroke lead over Herman Mutaawe into the closing round today.

The sh7m professional event precedes the main tournament which tees off on Friday on the same course.

Dickson Lagoro from Entebbe was third at 72 while Silver Opio and Brian Toolit shared fourth spot on 73.

Emma Opio, his twin brother Grace Ocici and their Jinja Club friend Ian Odokonyero tied in 6th place.

The main event that is in honour of Uganda Golf Union president Amos Nzeyi is expected to attract over 200 amateurs from several clubs across the country.
