Nkumba outclassed Makerere University Business School with a goal in each half to win the first match of the inaugural university football league.

Faisal Muwawu fired the visitors into the lead with a 20th minute goal before towering Roch Somoka made it two shortly after restart.

Muwawu was on target from a goal-mouth melee while Somoka also displayed good marksmanship by calmly placing in the ball.

Nkumba coach Emmanuel Amagu was all smiles and immediately declared his title ambitions. “An away win is great. My team displayed maturity. I now only need to correct a few mistakes and we shall be on the title path.”

Several MUBS students at the Nakawa ground were left speechless as they were ‘taken to school’ by their more versatile visitors.

MUBS coach Charles Ayeko attributed the result to an incomplete squad. “All I can say is that I was missing some key players,” said Ayeko as he walked away.

The hosts looked heavy while Nkumba, who will be playing in FUFA’s Big League, were more comfortable on the ball and could, with better finishing, have easily won by a bigger margin.

Nkumba’s punch up-front was diluted by Somoka’s adventurism. The striker was all over the pitch ignoring his twin striking assignment.

The visitors came prepared for the away encounter. They were escorted by a bus and two vans of vuvuzela blowing fans, who spiritedly supported their team throughout the match.

Nile Breweries and Crown Beverages, under their Pepsi brand, are the six-team league sponsors. In a bid to ensure participation of grassroot talent, super league players have been restricted from the competition.

Action continues today with Kampala International University hosting Makerere at St. Joseph’s Secondary School Nsambya. Kyambogo host Nkozi on Friday.
