The Archbishop of Kampala Diocese Cyprian Kizito Lwanga has started a fundraising drive expected to collect millions of shillings needed to redevelop the Namugongo Uganda Martyrs shrine.

In a press release issued to the New Vision on Tuesday, Lwanga called on the public to participate in this noble cause by contributing at least sh1000 and above every month for the next 12 months.

He said the redevelopment is due to the expected visit to Uganda by the Pope and the many pilgrims and tourists that visit the shrine every year.

“We invited the Holy Father, Pope Francis to Uganda, hence the need to prepare ourselves accordingly,” Lwanga who is also the custodian of the shrine said, adding that all funds will be accounted for.

The fundraising dubbed “Olumuli lw’Abajulizi” will also commemorate the martyrs’ martyrdom who were burnt in reeds.

The funds raised will repair the shrine’s leaking roof, construct multiple toilets, reconstruct shades around the lake, renovate the alter sanctuary and to construct dormitories for the pilgrims.

It will also improve the terrace and pathways, construct a martyrs museum and grottos for each martyr.

Lwanga said any contributions can be made via mobile money and to the account name: Uganda Martyrs Shrine Golden Jubilee and account number 3810600046, Centenary Bank, Lubaga branch.
