Accidents claim two along Kampala - Masaka highway

KALUNGU - Two people died in separate accidents along the Masaka – Kampala highway.

In the first accident a motorcycle passenger died on spot while the rider sustained serious injjuries after they were knocked by a speeding bus at Bukulula on Sunday evening.

Deo Kweyamba, traffic boss Kalungu district identified the deceased as Damiano Kato, 75, a resident of Bukulula village, Bukulula sub-county, and a prominent coffee grower in Kalungu district who was on his way to the burial ceremony.

He was the father to the Bukulula Sub-county chairperson Charles Muyanja.

Kweyamba said that the accident involved a Perfect company's passenger bus registration number UAL 708 D that was heading to Kampala from Mbarara.

He said the bus, driven by George Ishekanabo hit the duo on a motorcycle, a Bajaj Boxer registration number UDM 448E as it crossed the road.

The Police reported that no passenger on board was injured, but the motorcycle rider was rushed to Mukwano medical center in Lukaya in critical condition.

In a similar fatality another person who was identified as Haruna Lwamunda died on spot after he was knocked by a speeding Toyota double cabin registration number UAJ 107N at Lukaya.

The driver, Khasim Ssentongo, drove off but was later intercepted by police at Buwama in Mpigi district.
 

Vincent Ssempijja, the Kalungu East MP who witnessed one of the accidents, condemned the road users who are reluctant to obey the traffic rules.

The police explained that the two accidents were caused by reckless driving.
