Squabbles that have become common in local sports have spread over to what was previously considered one of the most organized bodies - the Uganda Rugby Union.

Unrest in Lugogo stems from the manner in which one of the union’s clubs sold off its property.

In a stormy special general assembly at Kyadondo Rugby Club on Tuesday, Kampala Rugby Union Football Club (KRUFC), executive members Sam Ahamya, brothers John and Henry Musoke and Steven ‘Foxy’ Ojambo were suspended from the sport pending an independent probe.

The quartet is accused of not being transparent in the sale of the club’s land at Lugogo. URU says the trio has failed to disclose members of the club that passed a resolution to sell off the land and thereafter purchase another piece of land in Luzira.

The land is registered under a private limited company, Kampala Rugby Club.

The four are also accused of failing to account for the sh3.6bn that was realized from the transactions of the KRUFC properties.

In a stormy meeting, both KRUFC secretary Ahamya and Treasurer John Musoke declined to name their members arguing that KRUFC is a member of URU by virtue of providing a facility and therefore URU has no grounds to force them to reveal their members.

Rugby Manager Yayiro Kasasa stated, “I was a member of Kampala till 2007 and these are my membership cards,” he said as he flashed them.

“But I know nothing about the sale. So, what are they hiding?”

He was however shut down by Musoke.

“Kampala decisions are taken by paid up members and not former members and secretaries.”

URU chairman William Blick interrupted, querrying why Musoke and group were hiding their membership. But he was shut down too: “We as clubs are okay and back off Kampala matters please,” Musoke stressed.

Ahamya chipped in arguing that it was not the mandate of the union to ask how they used ‘their’ money because they were a different entity.

Some of the members proposed that the ban slapped on KRUFC last month be lifted and the punishment be unleashed on individuals.

David Case however advised the assembly that it was not proper for URU assembly to decide on matters of the club.

The matter was subjected to a vote and 28 members supported of reinstatement of KRUFC. In another vote 27 voted for the suspension of the four Individuals.
