Over 400 former employees of the defunct Kampala City Council (KCC) have received their severance package, the authority's public relations officer Peter Kaujju has said.

The workers who were laid off on last August were to receive their payments within a period of one month as directed by the ministry of public service.

According to KCCA, the affected workers received a severance package of six months gross salary payment in lieu of notice, fixed annual benefit as spelt out and repatriation costs.

Kaujju said that the authority has so far spent sh.2.9b in paying off 471 workers. He said the remaining 169 workers still had pending issues to sort out with the authority.

“The workers who have not been paid have audit queries that they still have to clear with KCCA, but all the funds are ready for disbursement,” Kaujju said.

KCCA will spend approximately sh5b in payment of the severance packages to workers laid off during the restructuring exercise which affected over 700 former KCC employees.

The terminated workers were expected to hand over the authority vehicles, work reports, keys, identity cars and any other relevant information and equipment.

The exercise however did not affect health workers at the KCCA health centers and teachers in KCCA schools but affected teachers at the headquarters and division's.

Some of the workers affected by the restructuring exercise included individuals who were volunteers and staff on temporary terms.
