Uganda Golf Open to attract 60 professionals

Over 400 golfers are expected to compete in this year’s Uganda Golf Open Championships due September 1-6 at the Uganda Golf Club.

Over 400 golfers are expected to compete in this year’s Uganda Golf Open Championships due September 1-6 at the Uganda Golf Club.
 
Uganda Breweries through their Tusker Malt Lager brand on Wednesday announced a sh200m sponsorship towards Uganda’s biggest premium golf event during a press conference at Sheraton Hotel.
 
UBL marketing director Grace Tushemereirwe Gwaku presented a cheque to UGU president Kiryowa Kiwanuka and tournament director Herbert Rwamibazi at the press conference attended by Sheraton MD Ian Duncan, UGC vice captain Dr, Robert Lim Lim and Uganda Tourist Board’s Edwin Muzahura.
 
“The Uganda open has been growing in stature and popularity amongst amateur and professionals and we are determined to make it one of the essential vehicles for social and economic transformation in the country,” Gwaku said.
 
This year’s winner will on top of other prizes enjoy a ten-day free paid tour of the country courtesy of the Uganda Tourist Board.
 
To be played under the theme ‘sport, tourism, hospitality and friendship’ this year’s open is expected not only to attract professionals from the entire region but also from the Sunshine and European tours.
 
UGU president Kiryowa Kiwanuka said golfers will in this year’s tournament enjoy a ‘twenty hole’ experience because of the nature of sponsorship the open has attracted.

Several sponsors that include Uganda Tourism Board, Tusker, Sheraton, South African Airways, KK Security, Case Medical Centre, and HAS have been lined up to make this year’s event the biggest and best ever.
 
“This year we have taken care of golfers’ health, enjoyment and sleeping, so we much appreciate all our premium sponsors as all golfers are going to enjoy a true Ugandan golf experience,” Kiwanuka stated.
 
The tournament will kick off with a practice round followed by the Pro-Am tournament where sponsors and their guests will be invited interact and also test their golfing skills. The Pro-AM will also act as a qualifying event for eligible amateurs intending to turn pro.
 
The third day will see the official tee off of the tournament and the start of the first round for the professionals before the second round the following day which will also have the subsidiary category in action.
 
The fifth day will witness round three of the Pros and round two of the subsidiary event before curtains close on the open on the sixth day with the last round of the pro’s and later crowning of the winners at a glamorous dinner.
 
The main event will be contested for by golfers of handicap 0-8 while the subsidiary event will have players of handicap 9-15.
 
Participation fees for the open have been set at sh150,000 for the amateurs, sh80,000 for the subsidiary event while the professionals will pay an entry fee of sh260,00 ($100).
