With National Council of Sports (NCS), the basketball federation and MTN Foundation embroiled in a disagreement over managing the refurbished Lugogo Indoor stadium, NCS chairman Anthony Katamba’s resignation was not surprising.

The only surprise was probably the bitter manner in which the usually amiable Katamba parted company with NCS.

“It is with much regret that I end what has been an otherwise intriguing journey of achievement on several fronts,” Katamba stated in a 1820-word resignation tendered to Sports Minister Charles Bakkabulindi.

Katamba cited NCS succumbing to FUBA’s pressure to host FIBA Zone V Championship without proper equipment that would preserve the floor.

FUBA had earlier in 2010 prematurely used the stadium which caused damage to the floor hence costing MTN Foundation sh500m in repairs. MTN had earlier on spent sh1.7bn over and above what the renovation was anticipated to cost.

Katamba who is also an employee of MTN revealed that Bosco Onyik, an NCS council member was appointed by the minister to act as chairman without his knowledge.

“When I obtained a copy of the letter appointing Mr. Onyik as acting chairman in which you make reference to me being absent without indication of when I shall return, it became immediately clear that you had lost confidence in me as a chairperson of the Board,” Katamba said, in his letter to the sports minister.
