Speakers Forum, a Kampala-based non-government organisation, has opened up a community library in Bugodi village in Mayuge district.

This brings the number of community libraries established in Busoga region by the Speakers Forum to six.

The Bugodi library was opened by Victoria Sekitoleko, the director of the Forum.

“If you do not read hard, you do not have a future, so I urge school-going children from primary level to visit the library and read the books in order to improve their academic standards and pass PLE,” Sekitoleko said.

“I am what I am today because I read hard and excelled. The only way to come out of poverty in villages is through studying courses that are marketable. This way, when you leave university, you can be able to start up businesses like carpentry workshops or moulding.”

Sekitoleko said the organisation established the libraries in response to a request by village elders.

The elders said their school children needed to improve on their reading and writing skills.

Sekitoleko added that it is the residents, who provide a house or room for the library, while the NGO provides books.

She appealed for more books for the community library.

“My dream is to establish a library in every trading centre in Busoga. I also plan to place computers in these libraries,” Sekitoleko added.

She urged parents to assist their children in reading the books got from the libraries.

A child readers’ day was also conducted on the same day to increase literacy levels within communities and inculcate the culture of reading among children.

A reading competition was organised among four primary schools, which included Bugodi, Baitambogwe, Buyima Royal and Lugolole, where winners walked away with prizes.
