The prime minister has called for increased research funding, up to 30% of the national budget, if the country is to attain actual transformation.

“Inventions are means by which society is transformed, yet we have not invested enough in research and development,” said Amama Mbabazi, while presiding over the closing ceremony of the second Orange Uganda Community Innovations Awards at Makerere University last week.

Mbabazi said although there are financial constraints in the economy, he as leader of government business, looks forward to a change in the future budget allocations for research.

He hailed Orange Uganda and Makerere University for the initiative and the ability to support the country’s research.

“A company that invests in research is a company that knows what it is doing,” said Mbabazi.

Mbabazi encouraged innovators to focus on applications that address people’s pressing needs and encouraged the young innovators to persevere despite the failures associated with invention.
