The Rubabo Member of Parliament, Paula Turyahikayo has survived an accident that has left five people dead.

The incident occurred when a double cabin, government registered pick up she was travelling in collided head-on with a saloon car at Kiborogota in Buyanja sub county, Rukungiri.

Four people in the smaller vehicle died at the spot while the fifth died shortly after being admitted at Nyakibale Hospital. The district police commander, Christopher Ruhunde, said the accident occurred at around 2:15pm as the MP was travelling to her home in Nyakishenyi.

The MPs younger sister, her political coordinator and an unidentified woman were rushed to Nyakibale Hospital but later airlifted to Kampala for further treatment.

The MP sustained multiple injuries on her right arm and at the neck.

Among the dead were: Zubayiri Muhumuza, Prisca Kamusiime, Joshua Mutembeya, Alex Saasi and a woman yet to be identified.

Police attributed the accident to over speeding and reckless driving. Eye witnesses say the MP’s vehicle was on the wrong side of the road.
