Joseph Mawanda edged Joseph Kimera 4-2 to lead the way in the Buganda region charge in the Nile Special National pool championship in Masaka over the weekend.

Kimera opened the contest on a high after clearing the first frame. But Mawanda clawed back to level it 2-2 in a see-saw game that captivated fans at Drakes’ Pub.

But after taking a 3-2 lead, Mawanda never looked back in what turned out to be an all-Nyendo residents final.

The feat earned Mawanda a sh100,000 prize. Both players qualified for the grand finale due on August 25 at Lugogo.

In Mubende, Ronald Kizito who beat Brian Kiviri 4-0, led the way to the grand finale. At Entebbe’s Red Rosters, Uzairu Kamoga and Lawrence Nuwamanya made the cut while Tom Luzze and William Abby qualified from Lugazi.

The best 120 players will be picked in the five regions to join the top national seeds which include defending champion and seed two Khalifan Ntwali. Others are top seed Sula Matovu, seed 3 Adam Sebbi, Amos Ndyamaname and Asuman Bukenya.
