Members of Parliament representing Kampala have appealed to the House to prevail upon Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) and the Minister for Kampala to halt the pending evictions.

The MPs want the relevant agencies to undertake dialogue with the affected people to find an amicable solution.

MPs Richard Sebuliba Mutumba (Kawempe south), Moses Kasibante (Rubaga north) and Ken Lukyamuzi (Rubaga south) made the plea in Parliament yesterday (Tuesday), protesting the planned “massive” displacement of people in areas including Wandegeya, Mengo, Nakulabye, Kironde, Nanfuka, Ndeba and Nalukolongo.

Lukyamuzi went ahead and presented a petition to the House calling for setting up an ad- hoc committee to examine the legality of the evictions for the purpose of clearing the railway reserve and expansion of the Nalukolongo channel, without adequate compensation to the affected people.

Recently, KCCA gave encroachers on the railway line reserve 28 days to vacate.

The authority is planning to introduce railway transport service in a bid to reduce traffic in the city centre.
Lukyamuzi presented the petition amidst murmurs of protest from other MPs.

The Deputy Speaker, Jacob Oulanyah referred it to the committee of physical infrastructure.

Mutumba said people around Mulago involved in business such as carpentry have been given notice to vacate or put up permanent structures yet such ventures are employing a big number of people, majority of whom are youth.

He urged the minister for Kampala and government agencies to sit down and talk to the affected people to find an amicable solution, warning that already there is a lot of insecurity in the city.

He called for halting of the evictions.

Kasibante informed the House that many people had been evicted from Mengo and Nakulabye after paying for trading licenses and he questioned the move.
