Kampala Councilors approve deputy mayor appointment

Kampala City councilors Wednesday approved Suliaman Kiddandala as a deputy Lord Mayor.

Councilors by vote accepted that Kiddandala take up the position after councilor John Muwanguzi (Kawempe) tabled a motion which was seconded by councilor Elijah Owobusingye (Makindye East).

Last October, Lukwago appointed his deputy (Kiddandala) amidst protest from the same councilor urging that they had not approved his appointment.

The appointment of Kiddandala last year caused controversy among city councilors and KCCA leadership.  

“We have not had a successful council meeting after I appointed the deputy mayor in October last year, we need to clear this issue before we go ahead with the agenda of this meeting,” Lukwago who chaired the meeting told councilors.

Kampala Central, deputy mayor Resty Olama, requested that Kiddandala, present his Curriculum Vitae, to the council before approval but Lukwago explained that he had already received all the requirements last year.

 The KCCA act, 2010 stipulates that the deputy Lord mayor shall be appointed from among the members of the Authority by the Lord Mayor with the approval of the Authority.

The act also states that the deputy Lord Mayor shall serve on a full time basis and he or she is qualified to be elected a Member of Parliament.
