Janet Achola reclaimed her 1500m women’s national record after posting a time of 4:05.52 at the 30th Fanny Blankers-Koen Games in Hengelo, Netherlands, a feat that also qualified her for the London Olympics.

She had set the 4:09.51 mark during the 2010 New Delhi Commonwealth Games, before Annet Negesa re-wrote it with 4:09.17 at the Africa Junior championships in Gaborone last year.

At the same meet, Negesa confirmed her readiness to challenge the top runners at the London Games by running below 2 minutes over the 800m distance.

Negesa run 1:59.08, an improvement to her old national record of 2:00.40 set at the same venue last year.

The duo confirmed their qualification as Uganda’s athletics team to the London 2012 Games continued to swell with marathon runner Jane Suuto making the mark last week.

Negesa had promised to step up her speed if she gets a competitive field and did not disappoint. She raced with them right from the start, until the final few metres when her kick was challenged by experienced Kenyan Janeth Jepkosgei Busienei, who reached home in 1:57.79, closely followed by Cuban Yuneisy Santiusty (1:58.53).

In another development, Moses Kipsiro could only manage an eighth finish in the Bangalore, IAAF Gold Label Road Run in India on Sunday.

The event was dominated by Kenyan and Ethiopian runners
