Kyambogo University might lose 10 acres of prime land after the Uganda Land Commission allocated it to investors who have not yet been named.
The University’s main land title covers about 137.51 hectares.
Without notifying the university, the commission recently wrote to the education ministry seeking a noobjection to the parcelling and acquisition of land titles on Kyambogo University’s land.
In August last year, the university passed on its original nland title to the education ministry, so that it could parcel off its land for the proposed ministry headquarters.
However, on return of the original land title, a number of other plots, other than those for the education ministry, had been parcelled out, the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Isaiah Ndiege, said on Thursday. The land was divided into four plots of sizes; 0.561a, 0.173a, 0.442a and 2.699a.
In a March 26 letter to the commission, the university demanded to know how the land was divided without their knowledge.
Up to yesterday, Prof. Ndiege said, the commission had not replied the letter.
“Instead, we got a copy of the letter seeking a no-objection to the division of our land from non-owners (education ministry).” he added. Ndiege disclosed that the university plans to construct an industrial and technological park, on the land whoseownership is being contested.
It is not the first time that Kyambogo University has come close to the verge of losing its land.
Prof. Ndiege said last year an investor requested them for a land swap, a request they rejected.
