Eskom recognised for best health initiatives-Employer of the year Supplement

Eskom Uganda Limited, won the 2011 Employer of the Year Award in the category of Best Health Initiatives and HIV/AIDS/Chronic Illness.

Eskom Uganda Limited, won the 2011 Employer of the Year Award in the category of Best Health Initiatives and HIV/AIDS/Chronic Illness. The event was organised by the federation of Uganda Employers after a survey in which several companies participated.

Eskom is a role model that has made great strides in protecting the health of staff and their families. The company operates and maintains Nalubaale and Kiira electricity power stations in Jinja on behalf of the Government. They have put in place an employee assistance programme designed to improve both the a physical and psychological health of staff.

The company has a medical aid scheme for chronic illnesses such as cancer among dependants of their staff and each staff is entitled to medical aid of up to sh50m per year, according to the human resources manager Andrew Lumbuye. In addition, Eskom has an HIV/AIDS policy that covers both staff and dependants, all governed by professional standards of confidentiality and privacy.

Eskom contracted a team of professional counsellors who offer counselling and psychosocial support to staff and their families on a regular basis and carries out periodic surveillance of the prevalence of HIV/AIDS and other chronic illnesses among its staff. Communities in Jinja and Njeru in Buikwe district have also benefitted from the company’s HIV/AIDS community programme. It is done in partnership with the local councils, community- based, faith-based and non government organisations.
