Dear Counsellor,

Three months ago I fell in love with a girl, who was a student in a tertiary college up-country. She assured me that she was single after falling out with her ex. She said she was tired of dating because men were not faithful yet she is looking out for someone to settle down with. She said she fell out with her ex-boyfriend because when she went to visit him after completing her first year, she found that he had got married. I assured her that I had put an end to dating eight months ago because my ex-girlfriend was unfaithful. The college student accepted my proposal of love and during the next semester I visited her two times at her college. We also used to talk regularly over the phone, although almost every conversation ended with her asking for money. She used to beep my phone often and I would call her immediately thinking she was in trouble. However, two days after writing her final paper, she refused to receive my phone calls. One evening as I was returning from work at about 9:30pm, I saw her walking hand-in-hand with a man on one of Kampala’s streets. I called her after five minutes and she did not pick my call. I called again after 10 minutes. This time round she answered her phone and said she was in a film hall and hang up as I was still talking. The following day she called me saying she had not yet left college. Yet I had called someone at college, who told me she had left college two days ago. My girlfriend had made the call to request to meet me when she ‘gets to Kampala’. I am not in the mood to meet her again. The questions are: Is this girl not a “player?” Did she really love me or was it just a love of convenience? Is she marriage material or a mere gold digger, who just sleeps with men for material gain and money? Should I meet her again?
