A WIDOWER, one Musa Kironde, has sued the electricity company UMEME for sh138m over the death of his wife Amina Nansubuga,32,  who was electrocuted  in September last year.  In the suit filed on February 9 at the High Court in Kampala through Onyango and Company Advocates, accuses UMEME of negligence.

The resident  of Nakayiza Zone, Kabowa Parish in the city suburb of Lubaga, states in his plaint that Nansubuga died of shock on September 6 last year. He is demanding for sh138m as damages for  the loss of   her services, since she was the  bread winner. He claims  she used to earn sh390,000 per  month.

“She died at the age of 32 years and as such she had 25 years of an expected working life,”Kironde contends. He also lists the 9 dependants who benefitted from the generosity of the deceased.

Kironde claims Nansubuga was inside their house doing chores, when a high voltage electronic cable suddenly fell on the house. Additionally, he alleges that as a result of the accident, their son Musa Lukumani, 1, sustained serious body injuries.

He claims UMEME contributed sh1.5m towards the burial and medical expenses. Kironde however cites negligence, saying UMEME failed to detect distressed high voltage power cables. He also alleges that UMEME failed to ensure that the electric cables were safely secured and fastened.

Kironde also asserts that UMEME failed to conduct routine check up to ascertain the safety of the cables.
In summons signed by the court’s civil registrar Eudes Keitirima, UMEME has been summoned to file its defence within 15 days from the date of service of the summons. The distributor has been warned of judgment being passed in its absence in the event that it fails to  honour the summons.
