Police in Fort Portal is investigating circumstances under which a 27-year old man, a proprietor of various mobile money units, was attacked and shot in the stomach and arm by an unidentified gunman.

The incident occurred Friday night when Mitala Tonny, the victim, was locking up his mobile money outlets located along Bwamba road, near Fort Portal main round-about.

Eye witness reports reveal that a masked man clad in a long jacket walked over to Mitala in a customer-like kind of approach, pulled out a gun from his jacket and pumped three bullets in Mitala’s stomach and another two in the left arm.

The assailant then dashed off with a bag containing cash and telephones.

A heavily bleeding Mitala was rushed to Fort Portal regional referral hospital from where he was referred to Kampala International Hospital (IHK) after spending a night at the regional hospital.

Mitala’s close friend, Priyesh Patel, the proprietor of Seven Star Bread in Fort Portal, said his friend’s condition worsened while at Fort Portal regional referral hospital due to delayed service.

“We asked that he be referred to another hospital for better medical attention because we were not convinced with the reception and level of attention accorded to him last night.

“Can you imagine the doctor came to attend to the patient after one and half hours of waiting?” Patel sounded baffled.

Denis Ssembuusi, Mitala’s brother disclosed that Mitala hails from Nsambya, Makindye division in Kampala but has been residing in Booma cell Fort Portal municipality.

Denis disclosed that the attacker took off with a bag containing over sh12m and 50 mobile phone handsets.

He said that the life of his brother was hanging in balance as he was still unconscious by press time.

Among other businesses, Mitala is the proprietor of Digitel, Platinum and TM Communications, all mobile money outlets in Fort Portal town.

Mean While, Mugga Bakari the Western region police publicist said that a case file number 34|27|01|12 has been opened over the incident.

He assured that the region’s police “will not rest until full investigations into the incident are complete.”
