It is war, says Crested Cranes captain Wanyana

FOOTBALL is the beautiful game but ironically much of what makes it pretty is in the battles it produces.

Not surprisingly, Crested Cranes’ captain Christine Wanyana has described Uganda’s return leg encounter against DR Congo in the Africa Senior Women’s championship qualifiers on Saturday as a ‘war’.

The Cranes need any win against Congo and avoid a 1-1 draw for them to qualify for the second round where they will meet hosts Equatorial Guinea.

The Crested Cranes, who left for Kinshasa last evening, are just one game away from qualifying for Africa’s biggest football showpiece.

The battle line has been drawn at the Stade des Martyrs where the visitors will play on foreign ground for the first time eager to punish the hosts in their own backyard.

For six days, the women side has trained on Uganda’s only artificial turf at Njeru to get accustomed to the surface similar to the one in Kinshasa.

Coach Majidah Nantanda said before departure, “We are good to go. We have done our homework and the ladies are fit enough to take on DR Congo come Saturday.”

Nantanda said that she will employ the 4-4-2 formation instead of the 4-5-1 she opted for at Nakivubo on January 7.

Uganda has competed in this event only once in 2000 and did not make it to the second round.
