FIVE Makerere students’ leaders accused of breaking university regulations will find out their fate this coming semester, the dean of students has said.

The semester starts on January 30. They are facing expulsion over addressing press conferences and are accused of breaking university regulations that bar students from talking to the media about university issues.

The five are campus affairs minister Lawrence Sewino, academic affairs minister Ritah Nansubuga and Anthony Waddimba, a second-year student of economics. The others are Shaban Senkubuge and Ismail Kigongo, both guild council representatives.

The dean of students John Ekudu had earlier written to the students, asking them to show cause why they should not be expelled by the acting vice-chancellor, Prof. Venasius Baryamureeba. University authorities say the leaders’ actions incited other students into staging a strike in November.

In their defence during a meeting with Ekudu mid-this month, the leaders argued that they addressed the media in an attempt to promote the welfare of students as mandated by the guild constitution.

However, their defence was dismissed and Ekudu demanded that they apologise, if they want the matter to be settled.

But Sewino said they would not apologise because it would mean they were at fault. “We did not do anything wrong. What we did is in line with our mandate as student leaders.”
