The Police in Mbarara stopped the eviction of a church and school in Kakiika sub-county on Saturday.

They also ordered Wycliffe Nahamya and Agnes Natukunda, who claim ownership of the land, to remove the fence and polls they had erected.

Rwebishuri Primary School and St. Mark Rwebishuri Church of Uganda are on the 1.8 acres of land which the two claim.

The locals said the school and the church have been in existence for over 30 years.

The Police intervened following a complaint by the LC3 chairperson of Kakiika, Benon Mugume.

The district Police commander, Vincent Irama, told the two claimants that an eviction order must be issued by court and verified by the Police.

He argued that since Rwebishuri is a government-aided school, those claiming ownership of the land are supposed to negotiate with the Government and the Church of Uganda before any eviction.

Irama cautioned landlords to follow the right guidelines on evictions.

He told them to remain calm and assured them of assistance in solving the problem peacefully.

Nahamya and Natukunda reportedly bought the land at sh5m from Steven Babwehana, who said he inherited it from his late father, Petero Ntungwako.
