SPORTS press body USPA will today name the country’s best sportsmen and women of the year 2009, with reigning uganda telecom –– USPA sports personality Moses Kipsiro one of the favourites.

USPA will nominate a list for overall contenders and also vote for the individual best athletes from 26 sports disciplines.

The meeting is due at Oasis Restaurant, Lugogo.

Long distance runner Kipsiro is likely to battle for the top award in his discipline and the overall crown after an excellent performance during the season.

At the same time, another figure likely to be considered for the main award is the International Boxing Organisation champion Jackson Asiku.

Just like Asiku in boxing, Kipsiro won a silver medal at the world cross country championship in Jordan.

Kipsiro also produced brilliant performances at the IAAF Grand Prix, the Seville Cross Country and the IAAF Golden League, Zurich (5000m).

He was also had a good display at the IAAF Super Grand Prix in Monaco (3000m) and the domestic cross country championship.

USPA has expanded awards to include both men and women categories in athletics, basketball, golf, volleyball, chess and badminton where both genders have been vibrant.

“This is meant to motivate national federations and to recognise female sports personalities,” USPA general secretary Ahmed Hussein explained yesterday.

Hussein added that if the athletes are motivated, they would become more competitive in their respective disciplines,”

Today’s meeting will also nominate top performers in other areas including soccer, netball, darts, cricket, basketball and rallying.
