Patrick Mwesigwa is the acting executive director of the Uganda Communications Commission, following the departure of Eng. Patrick Masambu, its founding chief executive.

Masambu, who has served the commission for 10 years, handed over office after his tenure ended on December 31.

Speaking at his farewell cocktail party on Tuesday, he said: “I am humbled and honoured to be associated with the growth of the communications sector for the last 10 years. This leaves me with fond memories and a sense of fulfillment that I will always cherish.”

Masambu also thanked the media for contributing to the growth of the sector through informing the public about developments in the industry.

The commission’s chairman, Eng Abel Katahairwe, praised Masambu as a brilliant and sociable man who was a role model to his colleagues.

Mwesigwa pledged to build on the legacy left behind by Masambu, through his professionalism and leadership.

He added that under his leadership, the body would focus on consumer protection, research and development. Other sectors it will focus on are enforcement of licence obligations, ensuring fair competition and good use of resources.

The Uganda communications commission was established in 1998 to regulate the growing number of service providers in the telecommunications industry.
