If Kagonyera doesn’t jump, push him

Editor—Following the mismanagement of the affairs of the National Social
Security Fund (NSSF), members of the Makerere Convocation, MUASA and
Friends of Makerere, have voiced disapproval of his continued retention of the office of chancellor.

Kagonyera was deputy managing director of NSSF and was implicated in abuse of office involving NSSF funds. They argue that his actions or inaction while at NSSF have had the effect of making him unsuitable to hold such a distinguished office.

Having attended Makerere University for my undergraduate studies, I cannot agree more with those voices opposed to Kagonyera even if
the allegations against him are yet to be proved.
The basis of my position is that, as Ugandans, time is now for us to
start creating a culture that detests abuse of office and all forms of
corruption even if they are perceived as the case may be for Kagonyera. We
therefore have a great opportunity to have Makerere and other
institutions of higher learning that churn out the future generation of
leaders for Uganda to say no against the corrupt and those who abuse public office. Prof. Kagonyera should gracefully
step down and allow Makerere to get a credible official whose integrity is not tainted to steer the university to new heights.
This is the time because there seems to be sanity emerging at Makerere following the appointment of Professor Venansius Baryamureeba. Lastly, I wish to call upon all former students at Makerere to join hands in ensuring that the continued negative publicity
against Makerere stops. This can only be ensured by having the right people in charge of the
affairs of this great university.

EDITOR —To give ample time for the search process, the present chancellor of Makerere University, Prof. Mondo Kagonyera, should be allowed to preside over the next graduation ceremony for the last time. The ceremony begins on January 18.

He is lucky to have been given time to save his face by resigning.

Unfortunately, he seems to prefer being pushed! After being deeply implicated in the Auditor General’s report and NSSF advertising his position makes him irrelevant at Makerere University whose image has started improving. I wonder that he cannot read between the lines. The facts scream loud enough. In addition, the new management with Prof. Baryamureeba at the helm, needs a new chancellor to rejuvenate Makerere’s image locally and internationally.
