THE Government will focus on ensuring that peace and security prevail in Karamoja and that the region has food and safe water, President Yoweri Museveni has said.

Once this is achieved, emphasis will shift to the modernisation of agriculture and diversification of the means of production to boost household incomes, he explained.

The President made the disclosure on Tuesday while hosting model farmers from Kochari and Matany sub-counties in Karamoja at his country home in Rwakitura, Kiruhura district.

According to a State House statement, the farmers were on a study visit at the invitation of the First Lady, Janet Museveni, who is also the Minister of State for Karamoja Affairs.

The President told the farmers that since Karamoja is largely a cattle keeping area like Kiruhura, they need to apply the knowledge gained from the tour.

This, Museveni pointed out, would help them upgrade from local to modern farming methods to improve their livelihoods, the statement said.

He listed some best practices like fencing of farms to control livestock diseases, spraying and de-worming animals, and stopping bush burning, which he noted affects the productivity of land.

The President advised the Karimojong against cattle rustling and leading a nomadic life.

He called on the local leaders to sensitise the residents to avoid cultural practices that negatively affect their lives.

Mrs. Museveni explained that from her recent tour of the region, three sub-counties had performed well under the National Agricultural Advisory Services programme.

She said the trip to Kiruhuura district by the Karimojong farmers was aimed at enabling them learn good agricultural practices from their counterparts.

The farmers, accompanied by Mrs. Museveni, visited several of their colleagues in Kenshunga sub-county. They also visited Josephine Kizza, a model farmer in Masaka district.
