2010 is true to form, a year male grooming will take yet another stride. The weekly visits to barber shops and the gym; wearing the right cologne and making sure their skins are well taken care of through occasional visits to spas, will be the urban male’s pre-occupation this year, writes Gilbert Kidimu

In 2010, since guys will have no problem paying the gym a regular visit, they will opt for the slim-fitting clothes to highlight the V-shaped perfect masculine shape.

Colours
2010 promises to be a step in the fashion forward direction unveiling increasingly colourful and eccentric patterns. Samalie Mwebaza of R & G Boutique says bright colours like yellow will dominate the man’s wardrobe this year.

This year will also see the end of colour matching, where the tie is the same colour as the pants.

Kanyunyuzi of Select Garments says lighter colours like baby pink, white, striped shirts and off-white will be the favourable colours of the year. This might be the year black shirts go silent for once.

Tops
Fit will be the name of the game in 2010. No longer is there any reason to have ill-fitting dress shirts, suits or even pants. Fitting shirts work well both in the office and also on a leather jacket over an informal evening dinner. Mwebaza says the three-button shirt will rule fashion this year.

Wide collar shirts might prove less valuable this year. In a cold, rainy season; you will not need a jacket or sweater while in possession of a wide collar shirt.

Thin sweaters are likely to break through in 2010, although this time, plain and V-neck instead of round. V-neck sweaters are versatile.

You can wear them on jeans, pants, T-shirts and shirts, in and out of office. We are seeing more T-shirts with prints and art work.

Waist coats are also back. These are worn with thin ties, on pants or jeans and without a jacket and sometimes with hats.

Pants
According to Xenson, a fashion designer, fitted low cut jeans and slacks should not elude your closet in 2010. He says brushed jeans, torn and bright coloured, will make a comeback this year.

Straight fitting jeans are less chunky and show off the nice pair of shoes without appearing too short.
Yet again, flat trousers without pleats or turn-ups will be the option for every trendy man, according to Kanyunyuzi.

Suits
Xenson says the one-button-single-cut cotton suits, tailored to highlight a worked out body, will be a staple for corporate men. It can be worn without a tie. Also in the mold are tuxedos and pin strip suits, all sticking to the old dark colour rule

Shoes
The square shoe has bowed out and in comes the slip-in, tipped shoe, according to Xenson. Ostrap sandals are once again hitting the fashion scene. These are worn with shorts and T-shirts or short-sleeved casual shirts, perfect for the beach over the weekend.

All stars sneakers are once again fashionable, while leather sketchers have been modified into flexxers and resoluttes.

In 2010, office shoes will again go without shoelaces. The chisel-shaped slip-on loafers are the right way to go.

Accessories
The tie is dying out in evening wear and will most likely be replaced by the scarf.
Watches with leather straps are likely to be the big thing this year, replacing bling and chain watches.

The Cow-boy huts and newspaper boy caps are back and hot for the casual look. They are likely to stick it out through 2010. concerning sunglasses, black aviators are everything and more.
The scarf is another must-have, especially in dark colours like gray and blue.

According to Rajesh Babu of Smart Fit, a scarf can work in the place of ties, while attending social functions like parties. The masculine scarf is normally slim and short.

Wearing your tie loose at occasions out of the office is perfectly fashionable. English (slim) ties have effectively knocked out the traditional large ties.

“Men’s fashion this year will be reserved, more conservative and less costly due to the unrelenting credit crunch, but certainly very colourful,” says Xenson.
