EDITOR—Health centres in Bushenyi district have run out of drugs, according to the district drugs inspector, David Mukiza, (The New Vision, January 12). The health centres have had no basic drugs for four months!

According to the National Medical Stores, the health centres last received panadol and septrin on September 14, 2009 while coartem was last received on December 9! Since the minister of state for health comes from Bushenyi, I implore him to swiftly arrest the situation before it gets out of hand. If Bushenyi can lack such basic drugs, what do we expect to be happening in districts like Yumbe, Moyo or Moroto? On the same day, lack of blood was reported in Mbarara Hospital. This is a referral hospital that caters for a big region and population in western Uganda! Blood is life.
