The old generation must never supersede the young generation because at some age, the old must rely on the young for both physical and economic support.

Several youth including some known to me, have been compromised to step aside and because of their position and financial incapacity, they have had no choice but to stand down. Examples of these include Nzeire Sedrack Kaguta, who was to stand in Nyabushozi.

In Sembabule, Sam Kutesa recently exchanged words with his would be son Theodore Sekikubo in public. There are rumours that Gen Salim Saleh is standing in Nakaseke, so is Kirunda Kivejinja in Busoga, Henry Kajura in Bunyoro and Tarsis Kabwegyere, to mention but a few.

Why should being an MP be taken for prestige? An MP is less important than the people I have mentioned above, especially considering that they are leaders at national not constituency level.

For a person like Kutesa, Mbabazi or Salim Saleh to start contesting with fresh graduates at constituency level is not only limiting the base of the party but it is like a father fighting sons.

The NRM party has very experienced cadres with vast knowledge of Ugandan politics, but we are at risk of suffering a generation-gap (dead generation). Henry Kajura was a high ranking banker in 1978, honestly why can’t he let another youth from Bunyoro take up the mantle?

Kabwegyere was a household name in the early 1980s. Being an MP should not be taken for a job, it should be a service rendered in good faith. Honestly, there is no village in Uganda where there is only one educated person.

Ministers should not be chosen from MPs because they cannot lose their constituencies for fear of losing ministerial positions.

We are going to have a situation, where some NRM cadres are beginning their political careers at 50 years simply because the historicals have refused to give way. This is the right time for the Movement young cadres to take responsibility and get wisdom from the seniors.

Compromise in the NRM party should be avoided because it limits internal democracy and can cause defections if not handled well.

We need a younger generation in the Movement party that can face political challenges. Allowing young people to take up leadership positions will create a generational network that is capable of solving their own issues, just like Museveni has helped his generation to get empowered.

Lastly, the NRM party should learn to reward its supporters at all levels because it is not a religion that people will believe in by faith.

True that we need wisdom in running the party. We can reserve the big political offices for the very old and experienced leaders, but the Movement youth also need a chance to begin their political life early. Long live NRM
