A late Noah Ssemakula penalty yesterday helped Express wind up its Uganda Super League first round fixtures in the lead of the 18-team race.

All hope seemed lost for the Red Eagles until the 88th minute when Kinyara’s Yusuf Najib handled in the box gifting the Wankulukuku side the three points.

Express had earlier blown five chances with Daniel Sserunkuma as the main culprit. An unmarked Sserunkuma in the most glaring of these chances confronted an empty net only to kick wide.

“He was simply not in the game,” coach David Otti observed of the striker who sparkled with a brace in the hosts’ previous match against KCC.

As Express struggled to win, 16 time champions Villa were being humbled by newcomers Hoima. The Jogoos had a joyous first 45 minutes with a Moses Feni goal only to be given a rude second half awakening.

Umar Nkola levelled the score 76 minutes into the game before Mathias Kisitu stretched the lead before the final whistle.

Elsewhere Maji held champions URA to a draw. Henry Kisekka put the tax collectors ahead but Sande Lubega cancelled the lead with an equaliser.

In Bombo Swaibu Sebalu netted the all important goal to earn Simba victory over Nalubaale.

After losing 2-0 to Boroboro on Sunday, troubled CRO wind up their first round campaign when they host high riding Bunamwaya in Mbale today.

A series of poor performance has cast doubt on the survival of CRO having collected 14 points and are at the bottom of the table.

l KCC coach Sam Ssimbwa has dropped his intentions of signing Villa striker Simon Sserunkuuma.

Ssimbwa had been eyeing Sserunkuuma as a replacement for Moses Oloya (Vietnam).

But as the transfer window opened yesterday, Ssimbwa said he had abandoned the plan.

“Sserunkuuma is the player I have been watching at Villa but his playing attitude has changed lately,” Ssimbwa revealed.

Champions URA coach Moses Basena on the other hand is targeting Iceland club IBV FC returnee Augustine Nsumba. IBV FC off loaded Nsumba at the end of the season.
