A TOTAL of 197 schools in Rakai have been closed down for operating illegally, the district inspector of schools Abubakar Mutaaya, has said.

He said the schools were operating without licence from the ministry of education and the district education department.

Mutaaya said most of the affected schools lacked qualified teachers.
“Some teachers in those schools are P.6 drop-outs teaching P.7 candidates,” Mutaaya explained.

He said the premises in which these schools were operating were not suitable for reading and lacked facilities for co-curricular activities.

In Kooki County, 90 schools were closed, while 54 were closed in Kyotera and 32 in Kakuuto County. Mutaaya said these schools were started to con parents of their money. He cautioned parents against paying fees before confirming whether the schools were registered with the education ministry.

He said the names of the schools had been pinned up for parents to clarify before the beginning of first term.
