THE Makerere University Chancellor, Prof. Mondo kagonyera, has warned graduands against indiscipline, saying it would tarnish their reputation and that of the university.

Presiding over the second day of graduation at Makerere University yesterday, Kagonyera warned graduands against behaviour that could portray them negatively before the public. He cited an incident in which several graduands left before the end of the ceremony, leaving their relatives behind.

“Your relatives honour you and sit in the tent all day, but you walk away before the ceremony ends. What message are you sending out there?”

Kagonyera asked the university management to provide better facilities to accommodate guests during graduation days.

A total of 3,022 students graduated on the second day of the week-long ceremony. The graduands were awarded two doctorates, 149 masters degrees, 2,738 degrees, 49 postgraduate diplomas and 64 diplomas. The two students who were awarded doctorate degrees are Ninan Chandy and Kirumira rose.

The Makerere university Vice-Chancellor, Prof Venancius Baryamureeba, said the administration would start registering students online in order to register late entries. He promised to work hard to improve the image of the University.

Baryamureeba appealed to the Government to motivate lecturers by supporting them. He said the salaries that are paid to Makerere University professors and lecturers were not sufficient to maintain them at the university.

He said the university would focus on mobilisation of financial resources, establishment good relations between management and students and building entrepreneurship skills by working with the private sector.
