THE governor of Bank of Uganda, Tumusiime Mutebile, has urged the Government to support nurses by improving their salaries.

“One of the constraints in the health sector is the widespread staffing shortages, which affect all grades of health professionals. This is partly due to poor remuneration, which is not internationally competitive,” he said.

Mutebile noted that nurses work under difficult conditions yet the quality of healthcare depends on them.
He was officiating at the 7th graduation ceremony for Aga Khan University on Saturday.

Mutebile argued that improving the nurses’ livelihood would increase access to health services, since patients have most contact with them.

He thanked the Aga Khan Development Network for its role in education, especially in the health sector.
Fourty seven graduands were awarded diplomas and degrees in nursing.

The university president, Firoz Rasul, said the university, which was established in 1983, would set up more campuses offering advanced nursing programmes in East Africa.
