EDITOR—According to press reports, businessman Hassan Bassajjabalaba claimed to be holding on to the land title certificates for Nakasero market and Constitution Square. He was claiming compensation to the tune of sh100b if he has to release the titles back to KCC.

In response, “the director of CID, Edward Ochom, confirmed that the Police had the original titles for Nakasero market) in Central division.”

For the Constitution Square land, “the deputy spokesman of Kampala City Council, Herbert Semakula, displayed the land title to the press at City Hall”. As we all know, a lot of forgery has been going in in the Lands Office in regard to land titles and transfers. In many cases, two persons have been found to hold a land title to the same piece of land!

Therefore, there is a possibility that both Bassajjabalaba and KCC are holding certificates to the same plots of land—Nakasero Market and Constitution Square! It is advisable to crosscheck with the lands registry to ascertain what is on the white page of those two land titles. Do not take Basajjabalaba’s land claims lightly.
