THE education ministry is to recognise some of the military courses conducted by the UPDF. The Government has set up a committee chaired by the UPDF Chief of Operations and Training, Brig. Silver Kayemba, to handle the matter.

Kayemba confirmed the development last Friday during the pass out of 30 officers.

The officers had completed a six-month tank management course at the Armoured Brigade Barracks at Kasijagirwa in Masaka.

He said the graduands included representatives from the National Council of Higher Education led by Patrick Okaya.

“The qualifications you have amassed will be recognised by the Ministry of Education.”

“One requires an equivalent of A’level certificate to contest for the LC2 chairmanship. Soldiers will qualify to join political races when they retire from the army,” Kayemba said.

He said the UPDF is part of the regional stand-by brigades formed under the African Union to handle emergency peace keeping missions.

“Sometimes the United Nation’s process of intervention during crises is slow and before they come in, our stand-by brigades will be available to help within 14-30 days,” he said.

The Armoured Brigade Commander, Col David Muhoozi, called for more leadership training for army officers.
Muhoozi also called upon the forces to be disciplined.

The Commandant of the School of Armored Warfare in Mubende, Col Augustine Kyazze, and the Tanzanian army instructors attended the ceremony.
