THE Rapid Response Unit (RRU) of the Police has arrested 35 suspected thugs, among them three juveniles, in a countrywide clamp-down.

They also recovered seven guns and 153 bullets. The two-month crackdown which started in December was conducted in Kampala, Mukono, Mpigi, Wakiso, Mbarara, Mbale and Amuria districts.

Six of the suspects were arrested in Kampala, 20 in Mukono, one in Mbarara and two each from Amuria, Wakiso and Mbale districts.

The children, aged 10 and 11, were among the 20 suspects arrested in connection with a recent spate of house break-ins and burglaries in Mukono district.

The Police said the gang had terrorised the area, stolen property and clobbered residents with iron bars. The suspects broke into 30 houses in two days, the Police explained.

Police spokesperson Judith Nabakooba told journalists at the RRU headquarters on Wednesday that the suspects face burglary and theft charges. Present was the new RRU boss, James Katonyerera.

In Kampala, the unit recovered stolen car spare parts worth sh50m and arrested six people.

The spares were part of a consignment valued at over sh250m that was stolen from Osaka Auto Parts in Bulange, Mengo, the Police said. Nabakooba identified the suspects as Boney Bushobozi, Thomas Abigaba, Richard Nsubuga and Andrew Buyonjo.

Of the seven firearms, three guns and 80 bullets were recovered after security officials gunned down a thug identified as Gerald Kiguli.

Two other rifles were recovered in Mbarara as one was being used in a robbery, leading to the arrest of Muhammed Ssesanga, while the other was recovered in a sting operation as it was being sold by Charles Mwijuke, the Police said.

Mwijuke faces charges of illegal possession of firearms, while Ssesanga will be charged with aggravated robbery. One gun was recovered in Amuria and the other from Wakiso district after being hired out by a private security guard.
