BODY builder of the year Ivan Byekwaso inspired Uganda to second place at the inaugural FAME-NTP Africa natural body building championships in Eldoret, Kenya, Saturday, reports Michael Nsubuga.

The middleweight Nakivubo gym contestant who led a 12-man team to the event was at his best in his weight category beating seven contestants to emerge winner. Another Ugandan Rashid Kassim was 5th.

Byekwaso qualified for the overall final where he battled five other winners and lost to Kenya’s Paul Mwangale who walked off with a $1500 prize.

Byekwaso’s second place finish had him winning $1200 on top of $300 for his category triumph.

In the bantam weight Mubarak Kizito was runners up while Alimansi Kajjumba, another team member finished fourth and Joseph Serugga sixth.

Other Ugandans who had podium finishes included Umar Bulega (lightweight) and Sam Kalema who finished fourth and sixth respectively.

Mwangale will represent Africa at the FAME championships in the US in August. The event attracted 74 contestants from eight countries.
