Should we buy our own transformer?

EDITOR—In December last year, a transformer blew up in Kinawattaka, Mbuya. When it was replaced that is when our nightmare begun.

I suspect we got the rotten side of the new transformer! All our neighbours served by the same transformer have since had constant power.

The power we have is annoyingly dim and intermittent. When it is on, it cannot power a four-battery radio or a fridge! These reference numbers show my attempts to alert Umeme to the problem— M148142, M147418, M139287, M150226, M134885, M137960. Umeme no longer gives me a reference number when I call but promises to send “our technicians to work on the problem”.

It is now two months since the problem began and it seems there is no solution.

When we call Umeme, we are reconnected but after a day or two the power goes off. This has become a pattern. Meanwhile all my food is rotting and I have to ferry my children to the neighbour’s house to watch TV, and I have to pay for DSTV and the internet which I am not using! My neighbour stormed the Umeme Banda office and came with an engineer who promised to rectify the problem in two days but it is almost two weeks now and our agony continues! Now that we have given up on calling Umeme and rushing to Banda, what next? Maybe we should buy our own transformer as my son has suggested! I hope Umeme values us as their customers and will find a lasting solution to our woes.
